Gun-battle erupts in south Kashmir

Srinagar, Jun 6 (UNI) A fierce gun-battle between militants and security forces has erupted in the Pulwama district of south Kashmir this evening, police said.

They said personnel of 55 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and the Special Operation Group (SOG) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police launched a search operation at Tumalhalan village in Pulwama district on specific information that militants were hiding there.

As the security forces were conducting the searches, militants opened fire on them with automatic weapons.

The fire was returned, resulting in a fierce gun-battle between the militants and the security forces.

Further details were awaited.

Meanwhile, militants abducted Special Police Officer Bilal Ahmad dar, posted in Badgam district, from his residence at Hassanpora village in Yaripora area of Kulgam district in south Kashmir on the intervening night of June 4-5.

Police have launched a massive hunt to rescue the SPO.
