Government's announcement is a ploy to fool people: Congress

Ahmedabad, June 6 (UNI) The Congress, termed the Gujarat Government decision to abolish octroi from seven civic corporations, as ''a brazen attempt to fool people of the state''.

In a release here, GPCC chief Bharat Solanki and Opposition leader Arjun Modhwadia said the ''in principle'' announcemnt to abolish octroi from Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Bhavnagar and Junagadh municipal corporations is a cunning step as, from November, the election process would commence and implementation of the decision would not be possible.

Congress spokesperson Shaktisinh Gohil said the Government has made the announcement with an eye on the forthcoming assembly polls and it is merely a ploy to fool the people.

Had the State Government been sincere, it would have abolished octroi when VAT was introduced in April last year, Mr Gohil said.
