Cong refutes BJP charge of influencing Governor's decision
New Delhi, June 6 (UNI) The Congress today refuted the BJP's accusation that the Government had sought to scuttle the Taj Corridor case against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati by using the office of Governor, and said he had acted in excercise of his Constitutional power.
"The Governor is not the UPA representative but a representative of the President," Congress Spokesperson Jayanti Natrajan said replying to question on the Governor refusing permission to the CBI to prosecute Mayawati at the routine party briefing here.
"The Congress has nothing to do with the matter and the UPA does not interfere with the functioning of the Governor", she asserted and maintained that the Governor had only excercised his Constitutional right.
Asked why the CBI had sought permission from the Governor to prosecute Mayawati, she said the CBI was an independent body and the Congress did not interfere with its working.
Ms Natrajan criticised as irresponsible the BJP criticism in this regard and said the party had always been in the habit of attacking the Consitutional authorities in the past."This is not a healthy trend." She said the Congress would ensure that a good and responsive Government was formed in Goa. She said the elected party MLAs would elect their leader to become the CM.
