BMC rapped for pitiable condition of labourers, scavengers

Mumbai, June 6 (UNI) The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment today rapped BMC officials for the pitiable conditions of labourers and scavengers.

Officials from the Ministry had visited the BMC headquarters yesterday to study the living conditions of the scavengers and the labour class of the BMC and on learning about their condition, they were not too happy with the BMC commissioner and officials in charge of the labourers.

Ms Santosh Chaudhury, chairperson of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, told a press conference today that the BMC should increase the compensation paid to labourers, who die in harness, from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh.

She also stressed on the need to fill up the vacant positions.

The committee has further recommended that payment to labourers should be made through cheques on the first of every month, and they should not be hired on contract but on a permanent basis.
