STWA urges CM to take steps for recognisation of STs

Puducherry, June 5 (UNI) The federation of people of the Scheduled Tribe Welfare Associations (STWA) today urged Chief Minister N Rangasamy to take steps for the recognisation of people of Scheduled Tribes in the union territory and to fulfil their long-pending demands.

Addressing a press conference here, Federation President Ramkumar said the scheduled tribe people living in the union territory have been pressing the Centre to recognise them and recently also he along with PMK Parliamentary party leader M Ramadass had called on Union Home Minister Shivraj V Patil and Minister for Tribal Affairs P R Kyndiah in New Delhi and submitted a memorandam in this regard.

He said since, the scheduled tribe people were not recognised here, they could not avail any benefits of the government schemes, including one per cent reservation earmarked for them in employment and education.

Mr Ramkumar also demanded that an inquiry would be conducted into the allegedly assault of two ST youths of Bahur by the police recently in police custody and the culprit be punished properly.
