Rubber plantations workers make more money than coffee-tea labourers

New Delhi, June 5 (UNI) Rubber plantations workers are the highest paid with an average daily wage rate of Rs 89.77 followed by Rs 71.66 in coffee plantations and Rs 54.27 in tea plantations.

However, the overall daily wage rate for all workers in three plantations stood at Rs 58.37, stated the report on occupational wages survey in these plantation industries by Labour Bureau.

Although the women workers outnumbered the male workers in employment, their average daily wage was found to be less than their male counterparts in all three plantations with the exception of one occupation each in coffee and tea plantations and three occupations in rubber plantation.

According to the report, 9.78 lakh workers are employed in these plantation industries.

Of them, 53.54 per cent are female workers, 45.25 per cent male workers and 1.21 per cent are adolescent workers.

Majority of the workers constituting 89.48 per cent are employed as 'Plantation Labour' followed by 'Rubber Tapper' who account for 3.80 per cent of workers.

The report said 80.79 per cent of workers are employed on piece-rate system of wages, whereas the remaining 19.21 per cent workers are employed on time rate basis.

The report is part of the 6th Round of Occupational Wage Survey (OWS) being conducted by the Labour Bureau effective from 2002.

In all, 56 industries are to be covered under this round of OWS.

The bureau has already released its report on four Service Sector industries.
