Police open fire to disperse mob in Savarkundala

Rajkot, June 5 (UNI) Tension prevailed at Savarkundala in Amreli district of Gujarat as police fired four rounds in the air to disperse a mob which atacked a police station.

Around 50 people pelted stones last evening at the Police station after Savarkundala councillor Batukbhai Unava and his brother Raghubhai were arrested by police over a car parking issue.

Police had to resort to firing after bursting of teargas shells proved ineffective.

According to police, a police sub-inspector Makubha Gohel and Head constable Naranbhai Dafda were injured in the stone throwing incident.

The injured cops were removed to a hospital and discharged after first aid, police said.

The trouble broke out when a police officer arrested Batukbhai and his brother Ragubhai from the Panjapara area over a car parking issue. About fifty supporters of the Councillor rushed to the police station and indulged in heavy stone pelting, resulting in injuries to two cops. In defence, police had to fire four rounds and burst eight teargas shells to disperse the mob, police said.

The traffic police had requested the councillor not to park his car in the probibited area. Ignoring his request, the councillor and his brother had parked the car there. The traffic police informed the police officer, who later arrested them and brought the duo to the police station after heated exchanges over the issue.

The accused are being produced before a local court this afternoon, police said.

The situation in Savarkundala this morning was tense but under control, police said.
