Agartala, Jun 5: The BSF chief today asserted that situation in eastern border has substantially improved after care-taker government in Bangladesh assumed office.

Talking to newspersons here today BSF Director General A K Mitra said there have been a change in the attitude of Bangladesh with the change of power.

Mr Mitra said the neighbour country had allowed India to construct long disputed embankments on Mahanadi River and a number of minor irrigation projects in south Tripura.

''For the first time Bangladesh had not denied the allegation of sheltering anti-Indian militants and also carried out some action against terrorists,'' Mr Mitra said adding that both east and western borders of India were having a peaceful environment.

He also stated that Pakistan had been suffering from internal problems and due to heavy snowfall during the winters, infiltration and trans-border movements were reduced significantly.

''I feel General Musharaf is not in position to control the fundamentalist outfits and that is why there is no possibility of infiltration in western border,'' Mr Mitra said.

Meanwhile, the BSF chief had officially accepted that reportedly two senior politicians of Bangladesh, belonging to Awami League were arrested in Sonamura last week and were handed over to the police.

He, however, informed that former Bangladesh MP Mirza Ajam and Awami League Youth Front's chairman Jahangir Kabir Nanak had been arrested by the BSF for illegal crossing of the border and were handed over to police.

Mr Mitra was here on June 3 for a three-day visit to the state and reviewed the situation in border. He also chief minister Manik Sarkar and visited remote Border Outpost of BSF in the state.
