K'taka: Counting of votes in Ullal begins
Mangalore, June 5: The counting of votes polled in the June two byelection for Ullal Assembly seat began here today amid tight security.
The fortunes of five candidates, including four from major political parties and one independent, would be known by this noon when the final results are likely to be announced.
In a desperate bid to retain the seat Congress has fielded U T Khader, son of U T Fareed, whose death had caused the byelection, while the BJP has put up Chandrasekhar Uchil as its canditate.
Coalition partner JD(S) has fielded Abubakar Natekal while CPI(M) has nominated Balakrishna Shetty to contest the seat. The lone independent candidate was Bharathraj Shetty.
About 60 per cent of the nearly 1.60 lakh voters had excercised their franchise in the bypoll.
