Cong wins both seats in Manipur; absolute majority in House

Imphal, June 5 (UNI) The Congress today won the Khangabok and the Khundrakpam Assembly constituency seats in Manipur, by-election for which was held on June 2.

The party has, thereby, gained full majority in the 60-member House with 31 MLAs.

Okram Landhoni, the wife of Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, won the Khangabok Assembly constituency in Thoubal district with a margin of over 18,000 votes. Ms Landhoni got 22245, while Qutub Ali of the NCP of the Samajwadi Party polled 3613 votes.

The Chief Minister had vacated the Khangabok seat as he had won in two constituencies in the elections held in February.

Th Lokeshore won the Khundrakpam Assembly constituency election by a margin of about 2000 votes defeating his nearest rival L Premchand of (CPI) who garnered 7402 votes.

The party office witnessed a jubilant scene with workers celebrating their success.

Counting had begun at the Thoubal DC office for Khangabol and at Imphal East DC office for Khundrakpam at 0800 hrs.

The Congress is organising a formal welcome to the two elected members later today.

Congress leaders said even though the Congress had attained the magic figure of 31, it would continue the alliance with the CPI and the RJD.

The Congress, the CPI, with four members, and the RJD, with three members, had formed the Secular Progressive Front government in the state.
