Manipur: Border town continues to be tense
Imphal, June 5: Border town of Moreh, Chandel district continues to be tense after a youth was killed by Kuki National Organisation on June 3 last.
The Meitei Council Moreh (MCM) and other organisations of the border town had demanded action against the culprits and the locals had demanded removal of the Assam Rifles post from the area for allegedly instigating violence and supporting Kuki militants.
MCM general secretary N Pulindro and others discussing the issue with Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh last evening assured to provide two companies of Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) at Moreh to conduct an inquiry into the killing of Y Roshan of Moreh on June 3 last, with extension of ex-gratia amount to the family of the deceased.
Meanwhile, confrontation between troops of Assam Rifles and women of the area continued and troops resorted to firing yesterday.
Three women were badly beaten up by the troops.
The CM informed the UCM that the Assam Rifles was under the Central government and the State government can not shift it on its own. The local organisations had also forced closure of all shops in the town and for the third day today the border trade was affected.
Assam Rifles sources said they were compelled to firing at Moreh as women tried to stop their activities of arresting people, while the women folk countered that the troops were continuing to arrest innocent youths.
