New Delhi, June 4 (UNI) The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) today suspended the membership of senior advocates R K Anand and I U Khan following a sting operation by a TV channel showing them allegedly trying to influence a witness in the BMW hit-and-run case.

The SCBC took serious view of the alleged ''professional misconduct'' by defence counsel Anand and Khan, who was the Special Public Prosecutor in the case, for trying to bribe key prosecution witness Sunil Kulkarni in order to weaken the case against accused Sanjeev Nanda, grandson of former Navy Chief S M Nanda.

The SCBA has appointed a three-member committee, headed by its President P H Parekh, to conduct an inquiry into the ''professional misconduct'' by two of its members. The SCBA has also issued show cause notices to Anand and Khan.

Khan has since been removed from the case as special public prosecutor.

The Delhi Bar Council has also issued showcause notices to the two advocates, seeking an explanation from them.

The Delhi High Court has ordered an inquiry to be conducted by its Registrar General.

Sanjeev allegedly ran over five people sleeping on the pavement while driving his BMW under the influence of liquor in Chanakyapuri area of the capital in 1999.
