Vijayawada Division garners Rs 4.8 crore revenue

Nuzvid, Andhra Pradesh, June 3 (UNI) The Vijayawada division of South Central Railways (SCR) has registered a revenue of Rs 4.8 crore by transporting mangoes from here to Delhi.

Talking to newspersons here today, Vijayawada Divisional Railway Manager S K Sharma said about 30 rakes were operated to Delhi from April ten to June two, transporting 32,000 tonnes of mangoes. About 3,000 more tonnes of mangoes would be sent to Delhi by the end of the season, he added.

The division operated 30 rakes during the summer last year, registering a revenue of Rs 5.4 crore. The Railways collected Rs 15 lakh per rake this year, compared to Rs 18 lakh per rake last year.

Though the transportation of mangoes by rail started in 1982, it was in 1995 that the Railways launched a renewed effort to enhance the scope of mango traffic from here.

At present, Vijayawada division was handling the highest load of mango traffic in Indian Railways.

Mr Sharma said the SCR developed a strong infrastructure base at Nuzvid to enable hazzle-free loading of mangoes.
