Kohima, June 3 (UNI) The Nagaland government has taken up a Hydrographic Survey and techno-economic feasibility studies on the Tizu river for the development of inland waterway transport under Kiphire district of Nagaland, bordering Myanmar.

Official sources said the project, aimed at promoting Indo-Myanmar border trade, was sponsored bu the centre under the Ministry of Shipping. They added the work would be undertaken by a private company of Dimapur in collaboration with the Inland Water Way Authority of India.

The project was recently launched by the general manager of Nagaland State Transport (NST).

The idea of 'Look East Policy' was first conceived by Nagaland in 1999, when the Joint Sectoral Meeting of India and Myanmar was held at Kohima. Later, the Centre adopted the policy and subsequently submitted a project proposal for the undertaking.

The hydrographic survey, under central plan assistance, was launched at Longmatra under Kiphire district, from where the 42 km river starts and reaches upto Avankhu in Phek district.

The project would be implemented within a year and would be funded in three installments.

Official sources said once the waterway would open, it would be used in exporting natural resources, like minerals, agro-forestry products, CGI sheets, cement, garments, food items and others to Myanmar and other countries.
