Chandigarh, June 3 (UNI) In order to further strengthen its health services in rural areas, the Haryana government will involve Village Health Sanitation Committee (VHSCs).

While stating this here today, Haryana Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary, Health, Mrs Urvashi Gulati said that each VHSC was being given an annual untied grant of Rs 10,000 for minor works of village sanitation, health and transportation in case of health emergencies. The bank account of each VHSC would be operated jointly by Sarpanch and an Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) or an Anganwadi Worker.

The VHSC would play a pivotal role at village level in bridging the gap between demand and supply of quality and timely health care services.

She said that VHSC has been identified as the core group at the village level which would play a crucial role of being involved in the planning process and assist in community based monitoring when the district plans were being implemented.

Mrs Gulati also described village level planning as the major innovation of National Rural Health Mission that formed the basis of true decentralized planning. She said that under this new initiative, the inclusion of vulnerable groups and villagers, who were able to express their views through problem identification and proposal of solutions, would lead to improvement in status of health of the community.

The village level planning could lead to indirect improvements and change the dynamics of perception of the people, thus resulting in finding solutions to multiple health problems of villagers, she added.
