FIR lodged against private TV news channel in Kashmir

Srinagar, Jun 3 (UNI) The Jammu and Kashmir police today registered a case against a private TV news channel here for ''false reporting'' with an intention to foment ''ill will and hatred''.

The first information report (FIR) number 59/2007 under section 505 Ranbir Penal Code against the SEN News channel was lodged at the Shaheed Gunj police station here.

According to Station House Officer (SHO) Shaheed Gunj, Anzar Reshi had committed suicide on May 29 by jumping into the river Jhelum from the Budshah Bridge here.

However, his body could not be recovered immediately.

The SEN News channel then ''deliberately'' reported that the youth had not committed suicide but was in the custody of the police in Jammu.

The SHO said the SEN News even claimed that the information about the youth was from its reliable sources and the channel could even prove its claim.

He said the telecast of the news had disturbed the family, relatives and neighbours of the youth. They later staged protests against the SEN News channel.

The SHO disclosed that the police finally recovered Anzar's body from the river Jhelum at Fateh Kadal near here.

''For deliberate false reporting with the intention to foment hatred and ill will, police have lodged the case against the SEN news channel in this regard,'' he added.
