UCM to observe 'Great June 18 Uprising'
Imphal, June 2 (UNI) The United Committee Manipur (UCM) has announced that it will observe the 'Great June 18 Uprising' on June 18 and appealed to the people to work for territorial integrity of Manipur.
A function will be held at the memorial at Kekrupat, Imphal, where the people, who died in the 'June 2001 Uprising,' were cremated, UCM sources said.
After the declaration of extension of truce beyond Nagaland between the NSCN(IM) and the Centre in 2001, there was a mass uprising, protesting the extension of truce to Manipur as it threatened the territorial integrity of Manipur.
At least 18 people, including a woman, had died in the 'June Uprising'. The Manipur Assembly, official residences of the chief Minister and other ministers and offices of political parties were burnt by the people then.
Finally, the Centre announced the withdrawal of the decision.
