TN: SRU, exam centre for MRCP of Edinburgh

Chennai, June 2: The city-based Sri Ramachandra University (SRU) has become the first examination centre in the country for the Part II clinical examination for the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.

A Memorandum of Understanding, to this effect, was signed between SRU Vice-Chancellor S Rangaswami and Royal College of Physicians in London and Edinburgh and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (UK) Head Neil Dewhurst last evening.

SRU would be only the fourth such centre in South Asia along with other centres in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore.

A pilot examination was held a few days ago at the University with 'junior doctors-in-training' from Pakistan, Australia and Britain, attending the examination.

The examination would be conducted in two parts - theory and practical.

The theory part will be held in 26 countries and the clinical (practical) examination in nine countries. Those candidates who pass the theory paper can appear for the skill tests.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Dewhrust said SRU was chosen for its infrastructure and facilities, its skillset, laboratories and support staff.

''We have no plans to expand outside Chennai,'' he said while answering to a question.

The three-day examination would be conducted twice a year and 45 doctors would be allowed to take the examination, he added.
