Congress leader arrested for firing on police

Batala, June 2 (UNI) Prominent Congress leader Fateh Jung Bajwa and a village sarpanch were today arrested after the two alongwith their gunmen had resorted to firing on a police party that went to arrest the latter at Bhoje village last evening.

According to police reports, Fateh and sarpanch Ajaib Singh were arrested under section 307 and the Arms Act. The case was registered at the Ghuman police station last night.

Fateh is the younger brother of former minister Partap Bajwa, the only Congress MLA to win from Gurdaspur district. Fateh had contested the February assembly elections on the Congress ticket from Sri Hargobindpur constituency and had lost to the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate Capt Balbir Singh Batth.

Police reports said that the police party had gone yesterday evening to Bhoje village to arrest Ajaib Singh against whom a criminal case was registered at the Mehta police station in Amritsar rural police district. However the police party was fired upon by those who had gathered at Ajaib Singh's house including Fateh Bajwa.

Fateh and the sarpanch were taken away to Qadian by the DSP who led the police force to arrest the two.
