BPL List; Opposition moves privilege notice against Orissa govt

Bhubaneswar, June 2 (UNI) Opposition Congress today moved a privilege notice against the Orissa government for not keeping its promise to publish the fresh BPL list in the state.

Congress member Nalinikanta Mohanty raised the issue through point of order, drawing Speaker Maheswar Mohanty's attention on the state government's delay dallying in publishing the BPL list as promised in the floor of the house in 2004.

Mr Mohanty said the last BPL list was published by the government in 1997 and since then no fresh BPL list has been prepared although in principle such BPL list in the state should be prepared in every five years.

He said during 2004, the then Panchayat Raj Minister in the house had promised that the BPL list would be published soon but so far no steps had been taken to prepare it, as a result several needy people were deprived of benefits from various developmental scheme.

Mr Mohanty was soon followed by several of his party colleagues, who criticised the state government for showing little concern for the poor people.
