New Delhi, Jun 1 (UNI) Breaking his silence for the first time, prime accused in the BMW hit-and-run case, Sanjeev Nanda today said he was not in the car that mowed down six people eight years ago.

''I was not present at the site of the accident. I was not in the car,'' he said, in an interview with a television channel.

Hitting out at the sting operation carried out by the NDTV, he reiterated that he has nothing to do with the accident. ''I have spent nine months in jail on the basis of a testimony given by Sunil Kulkarni whose credentials are dubious,'' he said.

His credentials are being questioned by the media itself, he added.

Alleging that he was being targetted by the media, he said,''I am not a murderer and I am protrayed like one.'' Nanda, who is the grandson of former Navy Chief S M Nanda, is accused of driving the BMW Case in an inebriated condition and running over six people near Lodi Hotel in the wee hours of January 10, 1999.

Three policemen and three others died in the incident.

Yesterday, the Delhi High Court took suo motu cognisance of the sting operation and a trial court ordered an inquiry into the same.

It asked the TV news channel's Managing Editor and the reporters involved in the sting operation to submit the tapes.

The footage had showed Nanda's lawyer R K Anand discussing with Kulkarni, the only eyewitness, ways to bail out his client.

It also showed Special Public Prosecutor I U Khan talking to Kulkarni in his chamber.

Khan has now been dropped from the case and Additional Public Prosecutor Rajiv Mohan appointed in his place.
