People's attitude towards girl child changing: Association

Palanpur, Gujarat, Jun 1 (UNI) The 'beti bachao campaign', spearheaded by the State government appears to be bearing fruits.

The campaign has prompted a Palanpur resident, Bharat Jobanputra to start an association which has, parents who have one daughter, as its members.

The association claims to have 90 members at present, few of whom are from Mumbai.

Mr Jobanputra claimed that ever since the Gujarat government launched the campaign, people's attitude towards the girl child had changed.

Mr Jobanputra cited the example of Leelaben Joshi (76) from Deesa who has two sons and a daughter. But, she wants her daughter to light the pyre after her death instead of her sons. ''None of my sons is prepared to shoulder the responsibility of a sick, old mother,'' she laments.

He also cited the example of Rohini Jadeja who lit the pyre after her father's death. Ms Jadeja said, ''My father never differentiated between his son and daughter.'' UNI
