Haryana Gujjars hold demonstrations in Hansi, Yamunanagar

Hisar, June 1 (UNI) The Gujjar community today held demonstrations in Hansi and Yamunanagar towns of Haryana and pulled stoned of two vehicles in support of their community members in Rajasthan who are demanding Scheduled Tribes (ST) status for thenselves.

An official report here said that the community held a demonstration at Hansi sub divisional town of the district this morning and blocked the Hisar-Delhi NH for an hour. They damaged a Haryana Roadways bus and a jeep during the blockade which was lifted only after the police intervened.

Reports stated that the Gujjars from Hansi and near by villages gathered at Kali Devi temple and then in a procession marched to the SDMs office where they raised slogans against the Rajasthan government and burnt an effigy of Chief Minister Vasundhra Raje.

They later submitted a memorandum to the SDM demanding ST status for the Gujjars and action against those who were responsible for the firing on members of the community in Rajasthan.

Meanwhile a report from Yamunanagar said members of the Gujjar Ekta Parishad held a demonstration in the town and burnt an effigy of Ms Raje. The Parishad is headed by Ram Kishan Gujjar, an MLA.

The Gujjar mahapanchayat at Hisar had yesterday served 15-day ultimatum to the Rajasthan government to accept the demand for ST status, failing which thousands of people from Haryana would proceed to Rajasthan to join the agitation.
