Gujjar protests envelop NCR on day 4; 'mild' protests in Delhi

New Delhi, June 1 (UNI) For the third consecutive day sporadic protests and 'traffic jams' were reported from some areas in the Capital, even as Gujjars across the National Capital Region staged demonstrations, burnt effigies and blocked traffic forcing police to resort to firing and baton charging at several places.

While nearly 200 people were detained, and later released, in Khajuri Khas area of North-East Delhi after they blocked road at the crossing there, in Bhajanpura the 'jam' lasted for mere five minutes before police reached the spot and eased the traffic, said area DCP Jaspal Singh.

Some protests were also reported from Seelampur, he said, adding, ''All the demonstrations were peaceful. However, as a precautionary measure patrolling has been enhanced and police pickets in sensitive Wazirabad area and G T Road increased.'' At Dullupura area in East Delhi, a couple of buses were stoned and some people were rounded up under 'rioting' and 'causing damage to public property' charges after they tried to forcibly block the road.

In Pandav Nagar a crowd raised anti-Raje slogans and burnt her effigy.

In South Delhi local Congress leader Trilok Chaudhary blocked traffic for about an hour on the busy M G Road along with people from Ghitorni and Aya Nagar.

However, the demonstration remained peaceful, the police said.

In neighbouring Faridabad in Haryana, police had to resort to firing in the air after about 300 people turned violent and damaged buses and property at Ankhir Chowk Pulia area around 1030 hrs.

''Eight rounds were fired in the air by the police after the gathered crowd turned menacing soon after burning an effigy of Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and raising slogans against her,'' sources said.

At Anantpur Gaon people blocked traffic on the main Surajkund Road at about 0730 hrs for more than two hours to protest the May 29 killings in Rajasthan.

At Anantpur Chowki area, a police party was stoned by a crowd in which a Sub-Inspector and two constables were hurt while they were on patrol. The agitators later set on fire the 'Gypsy' (PCR No 18) after the police party ran for cover leaving the vehicle.

Police also had to lathi-charge demonstrators in Khedipul area when they tried to force a 'road jam'.

Two DTC buses were damaged in stone-pelting by a mob on the Delhi-Mathura Highway which jammed traffic for some time before police reached the spot.

In Gurgaon, one battalion, each of the CRPF and Haryana Armed Police (HAP) were deployed at sensitive points as a precautionary measure.

Forces also staged a flag march on Sohna Road, Gurgaon-Mehrauli Road and Gurgaon-Faridabad Road to 'exhibit' that it was prepared for any exigency.

At city's main crossings at Rajiv Gandhi Chowk, IFFCO Chowk and Bristol Chowk additional police forces were deployed and water cannons placed to 'handle' crowd gathering, sources added.

A minor traffic jam was also reported on Mehraul-Gurgaon Road but with the timely intervention of the police the situation was brought under control.

In Ghaziabad (Uttar Pradesh) a local student leader of MMH College blocked traffic at Bhopura Chowk for nearly two hours at about 1000 hrs. The agitating students also broke the window panes of a couple of DTC buses and deflated their tyres.

On the other hand the Akhil Bharatiya Gujjar Parishad in Ghaziabad today announced that it would block the Delhi-Dehradun Highway tomorrow to express solidarity with the demands of their Rajasthan brethen.
