New Delhi, June 1: General Motors (GM) India today said it recorded a jump of 56.1 per cent in May sales at 5,432 units as against 3,478 units in the same period a year ago.

''GM India has registered a consistent surge in monthly sales in 2007 which is a clear sign of growing market demand of our flagship brand Chevrolet in the country. The recently launched Chevrolet Spark is already making serious inroads into the small car segment,'' GM India' Vice-President (Marketing, Sales and Aftersales) Ankush Arora said in a statement.

General Motors India is also planning to launch the Chevrolet Optra TCDi (Diesel) in the near future.

Gearing up for a major drive to grab 10 per cent market share over the next three years, company's Halol facility has increased its capacity to 85,000 units to cater to the increased market demand for Chevrolet brand.

Work on GM India's new manufacturing facility at Talegaon in Maharashtra is in full swing and it is expected to start commercial production at the new plant by end of 2008.

The plant when completed will have an annual production capacity of 1,40,000 vehicles taking the total capacity to 25,000 units per annum.
