Srinagar, Jun 1 (UNI) Two fidayeen of Pakistan based Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) were gunned down after they ambushed an Army convoy near a police training centre in north Kashmir killing a jawan and injuring five others while 16 soldiers were wounded when militants of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) triggered a blast in Srinagar today.

In another incident, security forces killed two militants of Al-badr while two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed and five others were injured when a grenade exploded inside a company headquarter in south Kashmir.

A police spokesman said militants fired upon the Army convoy from a hillock at Sheeri on the 170-km Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road in north Kashmir district of Baramulla as it was passing through the area at 1230 hrs this afternoon.

Troops and Jammu and Kashmir police personnel posted in and around the training centre returned the fire, resulting in a fierce gun-battle in which six police personnel were injured.

He said one of the injured selection grade constable, Anchal Singh, of state police died.

The other injured, identified as Kulbir Singh and Hemraj from Jammu, Syed Mustaffa (Pattan in Baramulla), Mohammad Syed (Pulwama) and Iqbal Ahmed Khan, a resident of Batamaloo here were admitted to hospitals.

According to police two militants were also killed in the encounter. Two ak rifles and arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain militants.

A spokesman of the Pakistan based LeT identified himself as Dr Abdullah Gaznavi told local media persons that it was a fidayeen attack on Army convoy.

He claimed that several Army and Special Operation Group (SOG) personnel were killed and dozens other wounded in the attack.

Sources said about 600 recruits were writing examination in the grounds of the police training centre when the attack took place.

He said in the morning, militants of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) in the first major strike in the summer capital of the Jammu and Kashmir this year, triggered a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) injuring sixteen soldiers.

A defence ministry spokesman however, said only three army personnel were wounded in the blast.
