Chennai, May 31 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu government today appointed retired Supreme Court Judge Mohan as Chairman of the expert committee to view the Town and Country Planning Act.

An official release here said Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) Vice-Chairman, retired Additional Director of Town and Planning Department R Anbazhagan, former Professors of Anna University A N Sachidanandam and Prof I Anandarajan would be the members of the committee.

The Town and Country Planning Department Director would be the Member-Secretary.

The constitution of the committee followed a decision taken in the May 26 Cabinet meeting, which had also decided to file a review petition in the Supreme Court, in view of the dismissal of a case related to the regularisation scheme in areas under the CMDA.

Since the apex court had dismissed the guidelines formulated by the government to regularise unauthorised constructions, a situation had now arisen necessitating demolition of 75,000 buildings of various size.

''To avoid large scale destruction of buildings, it was decided to file a review petition in the Supreme Court and also form an expert committee, headed by a retired Supreme Court Judge, to review the Town and Country Planning Act.
