Nath's family files complaint with NHRC

Agartala, May 31 (UNI) The family members of Iresh Chandra Nath, who died following alleged police torture, have lodged a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission NHRC at Dharmanagar in North Tripura.

They have alleged that Nath (45) died in a private hospital following third degree torture by the police.

He was arrested in connection with the murder of a 12-year-old student at Bamunia village bordering Asom on March 19.

Police took him in custody on May 26 and he died in the hospital, on May 28.

The victim's family had filed an FIR against Officer-In-Charge of Churaibari Police Station and two other sub-inspectors alleging custodial death.

However, police denied the allegation stating that Nath had been suffering from tuberculosis, which was the cause of his death.

''We are investigating the case to ascertain the cause of the death as the postmortem report is still awaited,'' Additional Police Superintendent Arjun Debbarmma said.

Meanwhile, the villagers have launched a movement demanding exemplary punishment of the accused police officers and announced a mass demonstration in front of the police station from tomorrow.
