BMW sting operation: city court summons DCP(South)
New Delhi, May 31 (UNI) A city court summoned the South district DCP to appear before it today and submit the report of the investigation of the sting carried out by a private satellite channel in the BMW hit-and-run case.
Additional Sessions Judge Vinod Kumar also ordered a higher official of the channel to appear before it with all relevant records tomorrow.
In the BMW hit-and-run case of 1999 Sanjeev Nanda, son of a prominent arms dealer, is allegedly accused of crushing to death six people, including three policemen. A sting carried out by NDTV revealed the collusion between the prosecution and the defence.
A key witness, Sunil Kulkarni, approached NDTV two months ago, claiming he was under tremendous pressure from the defence and the prosecution to change his original statement. He offered to substantiate his claim through a hidden camera. Just before the testimony, he withdrew his initial consent.
The channel showed Kulkarni's first meeting with the prosecutor on April 28 this year. The channel also showed that during the meeting the public prosecutor stated that he had received instructions from his headquarters to influence Kulkarni as a witness. The public prosecutor then directed Kulkarni to meet 'Bade Sahab' R K Anand, the lawyer for Sanjeev Nanda.
On May 6, Kulkarni met Mr Anand at an airport, wherein talks about payment were made. Mr Anand's assistant introduced Kulkarni to a man sent to negotiate how much Kulkarni will be paid to change his testimony in which the final amount was decided after much bargaining at Rs two crore, according to the channel.
