2,200 saw mills to reopen in UP

Lucknow, May 31 (UNI) Over 2,200 defunct saw mills and plywood units in Uttar Pradesh are set to roar again which had been lying defunct for the last nine months, following a Supreme Court (SC) order on September 1, 2006.

Principal Secretary (Forest) V N Garg said here today orders had already been issued to reopen 2,196 saw mills.

Around 2,250 saw mills were closed following the SC order.

''Any decision on 47 other such units would be taken later, since they have cases pending against them,'' he informed.

Under the same SC order, 29 plywood factories were also closed, of which 14 are in the process of being reopened.

These saw mills and plywood units would start functioning in the next two days, Mr Garg added.
