Govt spends nine crore for BPL girls' education

Chandigarh, May 30 (UNI) The Haryana government spent about Rs nine crore under the Balika Samridhi Yojna during the last financial year to benefit 1554 girls belonging to the families living below the poverty line (BPL) in the state.

Stating this here today, a spokesman for Haryana Women and Child Development Department said that the scheme aimed at providing post-birth grant at the rate of Rs 500 and annual scholarships ranging from Rs 300 for class I girls to Rs 1000 for class X girls born in the BPL families.

The scholarships were provided for successfully completing each class, he added.

He said this financial assistance was deposited in a maximum interest yielding joint account like Public Provident Fund or National Savings Certificates in the name of the girl child and the designated officer.

The cumulative amount in the account would be payable to the girl child on her attaining the age of 18 years provided she remained unmarried till then, he added.
