Villagers clash with BHU security, 20 hurt
Varanasi, May 29 (UNI) At least 20 people, including four women and two scribes were injured when villagers clashed with the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) security personnel, against the closure of one of the six varsity gates in Lanka area here today.
The incident took place when the villagers were protesting the closure of the varsity gate opening at Chittupur.
Seeing their protest fall on deaf ears, the mob became violent and started hurling stones and petrol bombs on the BHU security personnel, police said.
The BHU security personnel also retaliated which resulted in injuries to seven people including four women. Two scribes Rohit Singh and Anup Kumar Sheel also suffered injuries while covering the clash. At least, ten BHU security personnel, including deputy chief proctor H N Prasad were also injured in the clash.
The mob also set afire a scooter and two bicycles.
The irated villagers also managed to break open the BHU gate which had been closed since May 14, citing security reasons.
Police and PAC have been deployed in strength on the varisty campus and the Chittupur locality to deal with any eventuality, said Additional Police Superintendent Dipak Kumar.
