Jan Sangharsh Manch seeks production of original CDs
Ahmedabad, May 29 (UNI) Jan Sangharsh Manch, a non-governmental organisation, today submitted an application before the Nanavati-Shah Commission, probing the 2002 Gujarat riots, seeking production of original compact discs containing details of the calls made through mobile phones of important dignitaries during the post-Godhra riots.
Adv Mukul Sinha, representing the Jan Sangharsh Manch, submitted before the Commission that the then superintendent of police Rahul Sharma had placed a copy of the CD before the Commission stating that the original CD was obtained by the Crime Branch, Ahmedabad, in connection with the investigations into the Naroda-Patiya massacre case.
Adv Sinha said the chargesheet has been filed by the police in the aforesaid case and, hence, both the CD and the evidences collected must have been submitted before the trial court trying the Naroda-Patiya case.
He said that such evidences would be of great importance for finding out the connections of the accused with other persons and further the original CD can be very useful for verifying the data obtained from the CD produced by Rahul Sharma.
Therefore, the applicant requested the Commission to direct the State or ask the appropriate court to produce the original CD containing information about the telephone calls before the Commission.
The Commission, then, asked the state to file its reply on the Jan Sangharsh Manch application by June 16.
Earlier, on a request from the Adv Sinha, the Commission directed the State Government to analyse and submit the contents of the CDs by July 21. The Commission also asked the Jan Sangharsh Manch to carry out its own analysis and submit their opinion on the same date.
The then superintendent of police Rahul Sharma has submitted the copies of CDs to the Commission which are believed to contain some valuable cellphone records between February 26 and March 1, 2002.
The data is expected to reveal some important information about the calls made by some top administrative officials, senior police officials, and political leaders.
