One person stabbed in Bhiwandi, rioting in powerloom town

Thane, May 28 (UNI) One person was stabbed to death as large-scale violence broke out in the powerloom town of Bhiwandi in Thane district of Maharashtra after the civic election results were declared today.

Police said a rampaging mob stormed into the house of one of the winning candidates this afternoon and indulged in heavy stone pelting on the way, smashing a number of vehicles.

In Nizampura locality, one person was stabbed to death by a group of persons.

The trouble broke out despite additional companies of SRP and RAF deployed in the sensitive town in view of the election results. More than five thousand police personnel were on duty, police said.

The situation was described as 'tense but under control' tonight.
