Defence Nursing Education Programme begins

Chandigarh, May 28 (UNI) A ten-day Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) programme on "Emerging Trends in Cardiac Emergencies" got underway at the Western Command Hospital at Chandimandir today.

Thirty delegates comprising nursing officers from various hospitals under the Western Command and also from the civilian hospitals would be participating in the deliberations.

Maj Gen Prithwiraj Rao, Deputy Director Medical Services (DDMS), Western Command, inaugurated the programme by lighting the tradition lamp and releasing the souvenir of the programme.

Brig S S Jaitwat, Officiating Commandant, Command Hospital, senior officers of the Western Command Headquarters and the Command Hospital and participants of the programme were present on the occasion.

Emphasising the importance of holding a programme on cardiac emergencies, Gen Rao said, "The topic chosen for the programme is very appropriate as cardio-vascular disease is the greatest scourge that is affecting the population worldwide and it is cutting across all sections of the society and breaking all age barriers." CNEs, he said, were the best platform from where the participating nursing officers could gain the experience and the knowledge, which would help them carry out their duties in future.

Earlier, welcoming the Chief Guest, Brig Jaitwat said, "The programme is aimed at providing a broad knowledge base to the nursing officers to enable them to meet the challenges of providing quality nursing care especially required for cardiac diseases." "In recent times, nursing has become a highly technical and challenging job and this forum would help the delegates in updating their practical knowledge," he added.

Giving the course overview, Lt Col Jyoti Khanna, Organising Secretary of the programme informed that different tools such as lectures, holding demonstrations, discussions and field visits to hospitals such as the PGI and Fortis would be used to enhance the clinical skills of the participants.

Management of cardiac emergencies requires high degree of skill, knowledge, accurate judgement and prompt action, she said.
