CM announces compensation for sugarcane farmers
Chamarajanagara, Karnataka, May 28 (UNI) Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy today announced a compensation of Rs 25,000 per hectare to sugarcane farmers who suffered losses following refusal by sugar factories to lift the crop.
Talking to newspersons here, the Chief Minister said despite implementing various welfare measures to protect the farmers' interest, including loan waiver and interest rate cut, they were taking the extreme step.
He said the loan waiver, ban on liquor and sale of lottery had cost state exchequer to the tune of Rs 4,500 crore.
''The government wants to help the farmers and the downtrodden but lack of funds are coming on the way,'' he added.
Speaking after laying the foundation stone for various welfare works to be taken up in the district at a total cost of Rs 369 crore, Mr Kumaraswamy assured to tone up administration in the district to make it one of the best in the state.
His visit was not only to remove the jinx with the district but also to fulfill the commitment of the government and take up development works which had been lagging for the last ten years.
