Thousands of nomadic tribals embrace Buddhism

Mumbai, May 27 (UNI) Thousands of nomadic tribals embraced Buddhism at the sprawling Mahalaxmi Race Course here today after paying tributes to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, architect of the Indian Constitution.

It was on October 14, 1956 that Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar had embraced Buddhism in Nagpur along with lakhs of his followers.

History repeated itself after 50 years when thousands of nomadic tribals joined the fold of Buddhism.

The event was attended by several important dalit leaders including RPI President Ramdas Athawale and Minister of State for Housing Pritamkumar Shegaonkar.

Members of nomadic tribes led by celebrated Dalit writer Laxman Mane, whose work ''Upara'' has earned international acclaim, converted to Buddhism.

Mr Athavale, who had organised the two-day event, himself administered oath to Dalits and nomadics, who converted to Buddhism.

The polo ground of the racecourse was full of blue flags and thousands of followers of Dr Ambedkar from all parts of the State came for the function.
