Tata memorial Hospital rape victim delivers a baby boy

Mumbai, May 27 (UNI) The infamous alleged rape case of a 16-year old cancer patient at the metropolis' premier Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH) took a turn when the victim gave birth to a baby boy, who died after half-an-hour of the delivery yesterday.

Talking to UNI over phone from Lucknow, the girl's father, Mohammed Jamal Khan said that his daughter who was undergoing treatment at an Ayurveda medical centre in Lucknow, was admitted at city's Queen Mary Hospital on May 25, where she delivered a baby boy in the early in the morning yesterday.

''The baby boy, however, died after half-an-hour of the delivery,'' he added.

According to Mr Khan, his ailing daughter is undergoing Ayurveda treatment at Lucknow's Lavanya Ayurvedic Kayakalp Anusandhan Kendra, where she was admitted on April 24, following doctors prediction at the Tata Memorial Hospital that she had only two months to live.

According to Khan, Mumbai Police was informed of the development, and Inspector Mr Kadam from Bhoiwada Police station flew to Lucknow to collect the dead body.

''After she developed labour pain, we informed Mr Kadam, who flew here by Sahara flight last evening and went back to Mumbai in the same flight last night itself, after collecting the dead body and blood samples,'' Mr Khan said.

When contacted, Bhoiwada Police station confirmed that Inspector Kadam had flown to Lucknow, but added that Kadam had not yet landed in Mumbai.

Refuting a news item, which appeared in a section of the media, that his daughter had succumbed to her disease, Mr Khan said that his daughter had been showing signs of improvement, especially in one of her paralysed legs.

The terminally-ill patient suffering from 'soft tissue carincoma', or muscular cancer, had registered a complaint on April 15 with the Bhoiwada police, saying that she was raped on November 20, 2006, the day she was operated at the TMH. The complaint also said that she became pregnant following the rape.
