DPI to organize 'Mannurimai Mahanadu' at Tirunelveli

Tiruchirapalli, May 27 (UNI) The Dalit Panthers of India will organise a state-level 'Mannurimai Mahanadu' (Rights for Land conference) at Tirunelveli on June 17, demanding 'House and Land for all.' Informing this to newspersons after chairing the regional meeting of the party functionaries here today DPI founder-leader Thol Thirumavalavan said Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi would deliver a special address at the conference.

He said to prevent some multi-national companies and foreign nationals from grabbing agricultural lands in the state, the conference would demand the state government to bring a new law to check this.

During the past few years, at least 63 fishermen from Kanniyakumari district were missing. Of them, 34 fishermen were missing for the past seven years and according to law a person found to be missing for seven years should be treated as dead. Hence, the Tamil Nadu government should give suitable compensation to the families of missing fishermen, he said.

Mr Thirumavalavan said his party would support DMK nominees Kanimozhi and Trichy N Siva for Rajya Sabha polls and also other DMK-alliance candidates.

The DPI would also extend its support to the DMK-alliance candidate in the Madurai West Assembly byelections, he added.
