VMC official convicted on bribery charges
Vadodara, May 26 (UNI) A suspended assistant commissioner of Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) Kantilal Solanki has been sentenced to two years imprisonment on bribery charges.
Fast track court judge S M Kapadia, while sentencing Solanki yesterday, also imposed a fine of Rs 2000.
Solanki was caught by the ACB on October 12, 2004 for demanding a bribe of Rs 40,000 to clear a pending bill of Rs 139,460 of United Research Organisation (URO). He had then agreed to reduce the amount to Rs 20,000.
Partner of URO, Shashikant V Sharma, then complained to the ACB who caught Solanki red-handed.
VMC had commissioned a study by URO on the BPL families living in Vadodara City. The URO had to be paid Rs 9.31 lakhs out of which only Rs 7.91 lakhs was paid. For the remaining amount, Solanki demanded a bribe in order to clear the bill.
