Vegetable cart vendors on strike tomorrow
Ahmedabad, May 26 (UNI) Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) vice-president Ashok Punjabi, who also heads 'Roji Bachau Samiti' of labourers has called for a bandh by vegetable vendors tomorrow in protest against corporates and industrialists setting up vegetable supermarkets which were affecting the daily earnings of poor larriwallahs.
In a release here, Mr Punjabi said while Reliance has set up nine 'Reliance Fresh' malls Subhiksha has set up 39. Big Bazaar has two while Star Bazaar has one which bodes ill for the daily wage-earners who depend on their larris to sell vegetables.
This could affect over one lakh laaris in the state leaving them unemployed, he added.
There will also be a Congress rally at 1600 hrs at Lal Darwaza, here. The rally will be addressed among others by Textile Minister Shankarsinh Vaghela and Leader of the Opposition in Gujarat Assembly Arjun Modhwadia.
Vegetable vendors from Kalupur, Jamalpur, Rajnagar vegetable market, Naranpura, Khokhra, Rakhial, Khadia, Isanpur, Odhav and other places will be attending the rally. During the rally a programme will be chalked out about future protest march in front of the malls and the effigies to be burnt.
