Two die in earthquake in South Sikkim
Gangtok, May 26: At least two labourers were buried alive today in a mudslide at Ravangla in South Sikkim following a ild earthquake.
Sikkim DIG Akshay Sachdeva said the mudslide was triggered due to a mild earthquake in Ravangla subdivsion at around 1100 hours.
The victims, who have been indentified, were working at a construction site of a building when the incident occurred.
The victims were dead by the time the rescuers dug them out, police said.
The death is said to be the first in many decades in the state, sources said.
Ravangla police had taken the bodies to Namchi district hospital for post morterm.
The local people said the area has been experiencing mild tremors for the past few days and they were unable to sleep in their houses out of fear.
Mild tremors were also felt at Gangtok and other parts of the state on May 21 and 22.
