SSS halts milk collection, demands better price for farmers
Kolhapur, May 26 (UNI) Kolhapur district faced a shortage of milk following the Swabhimani Shetakari Sanghatana (SSS) refusing to collect milk for two days beginning today.
The SSS has launched the two-day agitation in Western Maharashtra's Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara districts over its demand for a hike in milk prices for the supplying farmers.
The daily collection of milk in Kolhapur is about 10 lakh litres, through four co-operative dairies and few private ones. The share of Kolhapur Zilla Sahakari Dudh Utpadak Sangh (KZSDUS) alone is about 5.5 litres per day.
Mumbai forms the major market for the KZSDUS and the Sangh was forced to purchase milk from Karnataka and Gujarat to meet the requirements of the metropolis.
SSS chief and MLA Raju Shetty has claimed that the agitation was a total success in Kolhapur.
