Hamirpur (HP), May 26 (UNI) Former Indian cricketer and leading commentator Navjot Singh Sidhu today advocated the need for a new national sports policy as the present policy was defective and had failed to create a sports environment in the country.

Talking to reporters here, he said that the failure of the central government to have a right and proper sports policy and good governance was the main cause of deterioration of sports in the country.

He lamented that India failed to win any medal at international level athletic meets.

Sidhu said that besides cricket, other games also "needed to be nursed".

He said that the selfishness and blatant misuse of sports funds by various associations was the root cause of failure of Indian players to win medals at the world level.

Sidhu said that BCCI is one of the richest sports bodies of sports in the world but it badly failed to perform its duties to groom the game of cricket in the country. It had failed to create new bouncy pitches and was still adopting the old regional selection panels rather than having national panels.

He said that the BCCI should find out the root cause behind the downfall of Indian cricket.
