'Padayatra' to protect Ram Sethu reaches Puducherry

Puducherry, May 26 (UNI) Col S S Rajan (retd) along with Sanjay Shirodkar and Panrutti Srinivasan, a sadhu, who have embarked on a 'padayatra' from Chennai to Rameswaram demanding the protection and preservation of the Ram Sethu (Ram bridge), today urged the Union and Tamil Nadu governments to scrap the Sethu Samudram Canal Project, and to declare and protect the Ram Sethu as world heritage site.

Talking to newspersons here, Col Rajan said their noble mission, which commenced in Chennai on May 12, reached Puducherry today and they was accorded a warm reception by the Hindu Munnani here.

He said they were trekking an average 25 km a day and would be able to complete the 750 km and reach Rameswaram in 35 to 40 days.

Col Rajan said, it is the unshakable faith and belief of millions of Hindus that Ram Sethu, extending from Danushkodi to Talaimannar in Sri Lanka, was constructed by the Vanara Sena, led by Simian God Hanuman for Lord Rama to cross over to Lanka to rescue his wife Sita.

He said the 80 crore Hindus would not tolerate the demolition of Ram Sethu.
