Raipur, May 26 (UNI) The Chhattisgarh Human Rights Commission is inquiring into ''police excesses'' during which aged people, women and children were dragged out of their homes and assaulted in public view in Sarguja district on May 24.

''We have taken suo-moto cognizance of the incident.

Besides, complaints have also been received from non-government organisations'', CGHRC Secretary Dilip Kumar Bhatt told UNI.

He said Sarguja range Inspector General of Police has been asked to inquire into the matter and submit his report within a fortnight.

A large number of policemen had stormed village Ajaib Nagar on May 24, dragged out the aged from their homes and rained lathis on women and children during an agitation by the villagers, demanding inquiry into the circumstances that led to the death of Mr Vijay Deonath, a local businessman.

The villagers claim he was beaten to death, while police say it was an accidental death.
