Elderly contribute Rs 15.8 million to Indian economy
New Delhi, May 26 (UNI) Dispelling the myth that old age is all about being frail and dependent, a study has estimated that in India, people over age 60 contribute 1.3 billion voluntary hours per year, which is worth Rs 15.8 million to the economy.
Far being a drain on society, the elderly are huge contributors to the economic and cultural well-being of the nation, said Helpage India's chief executive Mathew Cherian, while sharing these statistics at a function.
There are an estimated 81 million senior citizens in the country and their number is expected to more than double in less than two decades.
He said Helpage India has launched a campaign, ''Proud to be 60: Who are you calling old?'' in an effort to break the stereotypical image of the elderly as frail and dependent.
As part of the programme, the Helpage India engaged with the Morning Club of Chittaranjan Park, to present a comic act ''Boomerang'' highlighting the dark side of human life in today's world. Most of the actors were above 60 and the drama gave them an opportunity to add colour to their lives.
"Life is to enjoy and the best way to it is through creativity," said Dr S M Dev, 77, a retired doctor by profession, who also played a part in the play.
Said Dr G S Ray Chaudhuri, director of the play, a retired professor in Economics, "The play helped us to interact regularly with people and added a meaning to our lives.'' This effort of senior citizens once again proved that they have a lot more to offer in spite of their old age, said Mr Cherian, while pointing out that the campaign 'Proud2B60' coincided with the 60th year of India's independence.
