Compensate traders for loss incurred in demolition drive

Kochi, May 26 (UNI) Ernakulam Merchants' Union today urged the government to compensate traders for the loss incurred due to the demolition drive undertaken by the district administration in the city.

Speaking to reporters here, Union President L A Joshi said the hasty demolition process initiated by the district administration as part of reclaiming encroached land had put the traders under immense emotional and financial constraints.

He said the government should adequately compensate the traders for the loss sustained due to the eviction drive.

Mr Joshi also demanded that government take action against those officials who had abetted the illegal construction of buildings.

A scientific survey should be taken up to measure the land in the city to reveal 'genuine encroachers', he added.

Mr Joshi alleged that the administration did not give enough time for the people concerned to clear illegal portions of the building, if any.
