Police sources said at least five others suffered minor injuries in the clash between the two groups at Block four in the complex.

While members of one gang were cooling their heels in the jail for indulging in illicit arrack peddling, members of the rival group were convicted for robbery cases.

The trouble started when convicted thieves Burma Seenu and his son Balu were attacked by the rival gang when they were being escorted to their block after trial proceedings via video-conferencing.

The gangs engaged in a bloody clash on prison grounds, attacked each other with broken vessels.

The gang that attacked Seenu and Balu were identified as Baba Suresh, Muthiah, Tabak Suresh, Dilli Babu and Babu alias Sori Balu.

The gangs already have a history of enemity outside the prison and were trying to settle scores.

Burma Seenu and Sori Balu suffered head injuries and cut injuries in the incident and were admitted to the Government General Hospital.

The bootleggers suspected that Seenu's wife Lakshmi had acted as an informer leading to their arrest. Both gangs belong to North Chennai.
