Raipur, May 26 (UNI) Taking suo moto cognizance of the incident, the Chhattisgarh Human Rights Commission has started an enquiry into police excesses on villagers, during an agitation at Sarguja district on May 24.

''We have taken suo moto cognizance of the incident. Besides, complaints have also been received from Non governmental organisations,'' CGHRC Secretary Dilip Kumar Bhatt told UNI.

He said Sarguja range Inspector General of Police has been asked to inquire into the matter and submit his report within a fortnight.

A large number of policemen had stormed village Ajaib Nagar on May 24, brutally assaulted villagers, including the aged, women and children during an agitation, demanding inquiry into the circumstances that led to the death of Vijay Deonath, a local businessman.

The villagers claim he was beaten to death, while police say it was an accidental death.
